Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Nursery School?
A Nursery School usually provides educational programs for preschoolers in the morning or afternoons for approximately 2.5 hours. The centre can also offer extended hours as a part-time program option but children can only be in care less than 6 hours per day. A Nursery School does not have to provide an outdoor playground but most provide areas indoors for large muscle development activities. A Nursery School provides snacks but generally not a hot cooked lunch. A Nursery School would provide time and space for quiet activities but not provide cots for the children to sleep on. Nursery School programs generally operate from September to June with Summer Camp being a separate option.
Are Nursery Schools licensed?
Yes, all Nursery School programs must be licensed. Any time 5 children of non common parentage are received for care (the parents not being present) then a license is mandatory from the Ministry of Social Services. The licensing process follows clearly defined standards set out in the Day Nurseries Act. All requirements regarding ratio of children to adult, education of the staff, programming, equipment, safety policies etc. must be met consistently before a yearly license is granted. Fire and health departments also carefully ensure their requirements for each child care facility are met. Teachers, students and volunteers at all child care centres must have a Criminal Reference Check before working with children.
Does your Nursery School have subsidized spaces for children?
This centre does not have a purchase of service agreement, with the City of Toronto, to accept children of families who require financial assistance paying our fees. Currently all families pay the same fee for our programs without government assistance. We are a privately owned and operated school and do not receive any taxpayer money for renovations or day to day program operation. We are therefore less susceptible to cutbacks and strikes.
What is the difference between a Nursery Program and a Drop In Program?
Nursery School has a license to receive children into care while the parents leave the site. Children are cared for by highly trained professional staff that design and implement stimulating programs for young children. Tuition fees for Nursery School can be tax deductible. Drop In means that a parent or caregiver must remain on the premises with the child. These children have access to toys and equipment on site with the direct supervision of their parent or caregiver. Fees for Drop In are not deductible. Drop In children do not interact in Nursery School activities.
